by Kim Schultz, SCPS Past President Lee Horton (Left) and SCPS Past President Roland Dubuc (Right) Lee Horton, long-time SCPS board member, plumeria developer, and SCPS Lifetime Achievement Award winner, passed away in his sleep on July 18, 2020. He was a gentle, kind, generous man with one of the biggest hearts I’ve ever seen. Along with his departed partner Roland Dubuc, he was one of the Society’s most dedicated members; they were always among the first to arrive and last to leave a meeting or sale. Among the more beautiful Horton/Dubuc varieties developed are Jeanne Cecile, Midnight, Mary Helen’s Rainbow, Dawn Sullivan, and Kim Schultz. Even though Lee served for many years as the head cashier at our SCPS sales, many of his contributions went unnoticed or unacknowledged. Lee was an acclaimed and accomplished international lovebird competition judge, and when our flower show began, he helped to develop high standards in the SCPS flower show and created the original judging classifications for...

Remembering Betty Feldman

by Kim Schultz, SCPS Past President Bill Pack (Left), Betty Feldman (Center) and her husband Dave Feldman (Right) Plumeria ohana, we are sad to report the passing of former SCPS board member and SCPS President’s Award winner Betty Feldman on Saturday, June 6th. She was ninety and a half. She and her husband Dave, who preceded her in death in March 2019, were longtime members of SCPS. Betty served as Publicity chair, making sure the meetings and sale events were posted in every local library and the local newspapers (and once, memorably, in Sunset magazine). Betty renamed the “Annual Plumeria Plant Sale and Show” the “Hawaiian Plumeria Festival” when she shrewdly noted that flower sales and shows did not get print coverage, but festivals always did—and she gave us a new goal to shoot for in terms of expanding our Labor Day event, even if it took us a few years to grow up to that name.
